Hi,
In the SQL Server 6.5, how do we restore a database through a .dat file?
Is it possible for the SQL 7.0 to use the SQL 6.5's .dat files?
Thanks for help.
JasonHi
SQL 7.0 has a different architecture to SQL 6.5 therefore it will not be
possible to use the devices.

You can't get 6.5 restored to 7.0 .. but I installed a 6.5 server on virtula
windows xp computer and restored my database on 6.5 and then installed SQL
2000 and used SQL 2000 upgrade advisor and upgraded the database and was abl
e
to do restore to newer version of SQL.
So maybe try the same trick with 7.0 Thanks!

This sounds like when you installed SQL 2000 you elected to do an in-place
migration of the existing instanceon the VM. This is a very good method to
use.
It's a good idea to practice the upgrade before the actual migration, in
which case make sure that you have a copy of the virtual machine with SQL 6.
5
installed so you can easily revert back to that version before doing a live
upgrade or additional practive runs.
Having the upgraded version on a VM gives you the means to test your
applications and processes thoroughly before migrating the live data.
